Travis,

I am the Board Chair of Veterans For Peace/Homeless Veterans Initiative in Milwaukee. We started our initiative to help homeless veterans more than two years ago. I would be glad to talk to you about what I've learned over the phone. My number is: 414-550-8945.

Travis: www.randlinhomes.org - please view this site. They have homeless veterans homes in Wausau so they have done this successfully. I recommend your starting a conversation with President Linda Larson Schlitz (715-212-2339)
You could speak to the folks who operate the homeless shelters as vendors for the WDVA. An example is the shelter at the OVE building on the campus of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. The best contacts are Scott Morey and Steve House. Ask for their advice at (715-256-1118) The VA has the Veterans Assistance Program out of Tomah. They might be able to advice you startup. Your CVSO is another county/local support system.
I have dealt with all these people directly. I speak to their committment and their heart. It sounds like yours is in the same place.

Travis, In addition to the Randlin House in Wausau, you may want to check out the "Oxford House" model. Portage County (Stevens Point) has one for men an a recently opened house for women. La Crosse has two or three houses also. It is a self governing/supporting model and seems to be a good fit for veteran populations. The Oxford House model is focused on alcohol and drug problems (which are often an issue for vets). I'm familiar with Menomonie (and Ridgeland) and believe you can find some good support for the idea from the local justice system. Check our the article at this site. Page 17 speaks directly to vet issues and the Oxford House model.

The folks at our local program (Justiceworks 715-344-3677) could be a good resource. Good luck!
