Andrea,
As Bob knows, we have faced similar needs for both military personnel, retirees and family members for sometime here in the Tacoma/Ft Lewis area of WA State.
Yes, to reflect some of the comments above, there are federal and state counselors…
That is a great suggestion....I've heard very similar stories, and while the up front pay is great, the price they pay in the long run is terrible, and they are without all the benefits actual military members are offered.
Hi Nathan, thanks for the input. For now, your wife might benefit from the Monday night group at Dryhootch. I think it be great if we all could have a planning session where we could actually designate faciltators, group days/times, and start…
Hi Kenny!!! I wanted to talk to you about this ride on May 15th....I work at NAMI Greater Milwaukee, and that is the day of our annual walk, where we plan on highlighting Veterans....

Yes, to reflect some of the comments above, there are federal and state counselors available and on-line suicide and counseling contacts. But no/no face-to-face, peer oriented support or self care network exists for us or across the nation.
We decided to start one : www.ptsdanonymous.org/about
Fort Lewis expects the return of 3 cby bdes (about 15K indivs) this Summer. We "assume" there will be a critical mass then. In the meantime, there remain some myths hard to break: spt grps can only be run by official agencies or counselors; meeting must be held in fitted locations, a trained facilitator is required, etc.
In the same vein as Dryhootch, we need more FOBes out there with more outposts at the community level all allowing vets and family members to meet in a neutral, safe atmosphere to talk.
501c3 nonprofit formed by combat veterans to "help veterans & their families who survived the war, survive the peace." Peer to Peer counseling, a coffee house & resources, a place for veterans to reconnect.
